Here are the steps to troubleshoot this error:

Delete SoftwareDistribution Folder Contents

Windows downloads new files, updates to your computer into SoftwareDistribution folder. You may receive this error when the files stored in SoftwareDistribution folder are corrupted. By deleting these files, you can get rid of this issue. Using File Explorer, go to C:\Windows directory; and then delete all files from the “SoftwareDistribution” subfolder. To completely fix corruption in these files, delete the corrupted registry entries created by these files.

Delete $Windows.~BT Folder

This folder is located at the root of your system drive. Delete it, or rename it as “$Windows.~BT_BACKUP”, whichever way you prefer to diagnose.

Disable Processor Overclocking

Bring up the BIOS Setup screen and turn off Overclocking feature. Set it to default level, in case it is set to higher level. Save the changes, do exit the screen.

Turn Off UEFI Boot

From the same BIOS Configurations screen, enable UEFI Boot feature which is located in the Boot menu. Use the keyboard arrow keys.

Disconnect Peripheral Devices

Disconnect all peripheral devices connected to your computer, including External Hard Disk connected with USB cords, Projector, eSATA Drive, Barcode Reader, USB Flash Drive, Scanner, Memory Card, Printer, Digital Camera, Gaming Controller, and so on.

Update BIOS Firmware

Visit the website of your computer manufacturer to obtain latest BIOS Firmware update. Search for a compatible version under Downloads category. Do NOT download incompatible/ older version, as it may cause serious problems with your PC. Contact the Customer Support Department for more information.

Clean Boot

Do not load third party startups, services by disabling them using System Configuration tool. A system reboot is required. This option is located in the Boot tab.

Download Driver Updates

Using Device Manager tool from Devices and Printers sub category in Hardware and Sound category, update all driver updates. Click Top Node > Scan for hardware changes option.

Delete Mounted Images Sub Key

The data stored in Mounted Images sub key can be corrupted. Delete that sub key located in following path:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | SOFTWARE | Microsoft | WIMMount

Remove Faulty Drivers

If you’ve a device entry named “ReadyNAS 104” into Device Manager, uninstall it.

Uninstall WDTVLiveOffice

From the list of installed programs, uninstall “WDTV Live Office” which is a third party music player that reportedly conflicts with your PC.

Reset Windows Update Components
