The Need to Identify Owner of your Shared Files

As you upload new files to OneDrive and share files among different people and teams, at some point in time, it can cause confusion as to who’s the actual owner of some files in your Shared folder.

Identifying the Owner of your OneDrive Shared Files & Folders

Method 1:

  1. Open the OneDrive website and sign-in to your OneDrive account.
  2. Click on the Shared tab on the left-hand side panel.
  3. All the shared files and folders in your OneDrive account will now be visible.
  4. Select a file or folder to view its ownership details.
  5. Click the Shared link-label under the Sharing column. If you’re unable to see the Sharing column, make sure that you’re not using the Tiles mode. You’ll want to change the Folder View to list mode by clicking on the Switch View Options icon, and then selecting the List mode.
  6. Click on Manage Access.
  7. You’ll see a list of people with whom the folder is shared. The first person in the list is the folder owner. People with permissions to edit the documents will have the Can edit status. Those with only viewing permissions will have the Can view status.

Method 2:

  1. Open the OneDrive website and sign-in to your OneDrive account.
  2. Right-click on a file or folder to check its ownership.
  3. Select the Details option from the right-click menu options.
  4. Click on Manage Access.
  5. You’ll see all the people with whom the file/ folder is shared. The topmost person is the owner of that file/ folder.

Transferring Ownership of your OneDrive Files & Folders

Method 1:

  1. Open up OneDrive and click the Shared tab.
  2. Choose a file or folder you want to change permissions.
  3. Click the Shared link ahead of the file or folder in the Sharing column. If you’re unable to see it, make sure that you’re not viewing in the Tiles mode.
  4. Click on Manage Access | Grant Access.
  5. Type in the email address or name of the person (if thy’re already in contacts) to add them as the new owner.
  6. Select Can Edit next to the recipient’s email id or name.
  7. As soon as the changes are saved, they will start seeing the file or folder in the Shared tab of their OneDrive account. You can also manually inform them over an email about the change.

Method 2:

  1. Open OneDrive.
  2. Right-click a file or folder to change its ownership.
  3. Select the Details option.
  4. Click on Manage Access > Grant Access.
  5. Enter the email address or name of the person to make them owner of your file or folder.
  6. Click on Can Edit next to that individual.
