In many cases, this happens due to problems with the Windows Registry settings. Your computer settings are not properly configured or some of the program features are not compatible with your system. Compatible w/ Windows 10/ 8.1/ 8/ 7/ Vista/ XP. Reinstall TurboTax Some of your TurboTax program files are corrupted. Reinstalling the program may fix software crashes. Remember, you must backup all of your Tax files to a safe location, for example, an external storage media, for being on the safe side. Your original Tax files may get affected during this process. For Windows 8.1/ 8: Press Windows Key + X; choose Control Panel. Click Programs | Programs and Features. In the new page that opens, scroll down the list. Right-click TurboTax program entry, select Uninstall option. Follow the removal wizard, and then restart your PC. Download a fresh version from the Internet. For Windows 7: Click Start; select Control Panel. Then click Programs icon, and then click “Uninstall a program” on the subsequent page. Refer to steps # 3-6 under Windows 8.1/ 8 user’s section. For Windows Vista: Click Start; choose Control Panel. Click Programs icon, and then click Programs and Features. In subsequent screen, click Uninstall a program. Refer to steps # 3-6 under Windows 8.1/ 8 user’s section. Mismatched, Incompatible Version There is also a possibility of mismatched information with system and program version. TurboTax version installed on your machine may not be supported by Windows version. Update your System Download the latest hardware drivers for your system — including display driver. You might have missed checking new driver updates. For Windows 8.1/ 8: Press Windows Key + C; select Settings | Control Panel in the Charms Bar that opens. Click System and Services | Administrative Tools. Double-click Computer Management. Expand top node, then Device Manager node, and update each device driver. (Right click > Update driver software) For Windows 7: Click Start. Click Control Panel | System and Security | System | Device Manager. Update your devices from the new window. (Right click > Update driver software) For Windows Vista: Click Start | Control Panel | System and Maintenance. Open Device Manager from the subsequent page. Update all outdated drivers displayed in Device Manager window. Reinstall Microsoft .NET Framework The existing installation of Microsoft .NET Framework has corrupted. Uninstall it from Control Panel and download newer version from here. Temporarily Disable Antivirus It may be possible that TurboTax file is blocked by your Antivirus software. Temporarily disable the real-time protection, or add the file to the Excluded Files List by configuring program settings correctly. Disabling Antivirus: (Avast Antivirus) Click upward arrow on the system tray, in case of Windows 8.1/ 8. For earlier versions, click “More” button on the system tray. Right-click your Antivirus program icon, and select Silent/ gaming mode. If no such option is found, select Disable/ Stop/ Pause Protection option, as the case may be. Excluding Program File from Protection:(Avast Antivirus) Open up the main user interface. Click Settings icon in left panel of the screen. As default you have General settings page opened on your screen. Expand “Exclusions” category. Click Browse and add the TurboTax program file. C:\Program Files (x86)\TurboTax 2012\tt2012.exe [Actual file name may vary depending on the program version and installation directory] Click Add, and then OK. Run Program in Compatibility Mode Try attempting to run the program in compatibility mode as some of the program features may not be supported. For Windows 8.1/ 8/ 7/ Vista: Right click TurboTax Desktop shortcut. Select Properties. Click Compatibility tab in new dialog. Select an earlier Windows, and then click Apply | OK.
