Duplicate files are a cause of great headache and distress — not only for individuals, but also for businesses and organizations. Aside from occupying a part of your storage space, duplicate files slow down the computer performance, and increase the difficulty level in finding the right version of your document. It becomes difficult to identify which was the most updated version that contains your recent changes. Duplicates are not located in a specific folder, and therefore, it becomes fairly difficult to identify and act upon them. MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 are some of the widely popular and secure file hashing algorithms commonly used to compare file contents. Apart from finding duplicate files, hashes are also used to get indication of accidental corruption of user’s confidential information. Here, the idea is to generate hashes for each file based on their unique content. Thankfully, Windows has an in-house functionality to manually compute SHA-256 hashes. Since the hash values are generated by the Windows itself, there is accuracy and reliability in the process. It, however, requires longer efforts on the part of the user. You may have to sit in front of the computer screen generating hashes and comparing each of them individually. This may not be a feasible approach if you’re a business user or if you intend to search a larger dataset consisting tens of GBs of files. The procedure is as follows: Type PowerShell in the Search Box on your Taskbar. Right-click Windows PowerShell, and select Run as Administrator. Type in the following command: Get-FileHash <full path to your desired file> | Format-List For example: If the desired file name is Tutorial.pdf, and it is stored in the D:\Downloads folder, type: Get-FileHash D:\Downloads\Tutorial.pdf | Format-List Caution: PowerShell is a key program that’s been a core part of the Microsoft Windows operating system just like Command Prompt. Although it offers useful set of rich features and access to many administrative tasks, using incorrect commands could cause damage to your system and/ or data loss. It is recommended to always verify the command-line and recheck the file names before processing any commands. Some of the commands are case-sensitive. Meaning, they may not work if you do not enter them in the given pattern (such as, upper case, lower case), just like passwords. Method # 2: Automatically Scan For Duplicate Files (Takes Shorter Time & 100% Secure & Accurate) The most famous technique to find Adobe Creative Cloud duplicates is to use a specialized software designed to automatically generate and compare hashes.
